Europe Celebrates Linguistic Diversity
Atlas is looking forward to celebrating the European Day of Languages, which will be taking place on 26th September. This day, which was first celebrated in 2001, during the European Year of Languages, has now become an annual event. Its aim is to celebrate the linguistic diversity of Europe and promote communication between European citizens by breaking down cultural and linguistic barriers.

The day celebrates our differences and similarities, and promotes life-long language learning. It is an annual reminder of the need to improve linguistic capability throughout Europe. In the UK, participation is encouraged by, and organised through, the Centre for Information on Language Teaching (CILT), whose website can be found by clicking on the following link: http://www.cilt.org.uk
Harry Potter Translation Lands Schoolboy in Hot Water
A 16-year-old school boy was spared from prosecution, earlier this week, when JK Rowling, the author of the world famous Harry Potter books stepped in to prevent a huge damages claim being brought against him for publishing a translation of her latest book on the internet.

The boy, who admitted to translating Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows and circulating it on the internet, two months prior to the official publication the French version, claimed he had done so not for financial gain but instead on behalf of “the millions of impatient Harry Potter fans in France waiting for the book to appear in French.”
Flexibility = Success for Small Businesses
New research from Citrix Online has found that smaller businesses have been slow to benefit from increased flexibility, since they have failed to welcome modern working practices, such as home-working and job-sharing, in the same way as larger companies.

According to Simon Presswell, Managing Director EMEA, Citrix Online, this slow response would appear to have a negative impact on the productivity of smaller business. He says:
“Given the importance of flexible working practices in attracting and retaining the best talent, small and medium-sized businesses are in danger of missing out on the most skilled professionals, many of whom are parents and are increasingly demanding work-life balance.”
Atlas Translations, however, is countering this trend. Clare Suttie, the firm’s Director commented:
“Atlas certainly supports home-working, with a number of staff working a few days a week at home on a regular basis. Atlas has invested in technology with secure network links so that homeworkers can access the office network and work as normal, wherever they are!”
Atlas Office News
As August is always a busy month for Atlas, the team is delighted to welcome back Helen Morgan, who worked for Atlas from 2000 to 2002 before jetting off to glamorous New York! Now she’s relocating back to London, and is spending a month at Atlas helping the team with project management work.
Atlas Staff Have Their Say
Last month Atlas welcomed two new Project Managers into the team. This month, as promised, they have both contributed to the newsletter with news of how they are settling in…
I joined Atlas as a Project Manager after starting as a WP back in June. It’s been pretty busy since I joined – there hasn’t been a dull moment! There’s such a variety of work, too – it could be a twenty thousand word health booklet being produced in 5 Indian languages, or an hour of Macedonian telephone interpreting! I feel I’ve settled in well, thanks to the great atmosphere in the office (that is to say, the lovely Atlas team!), and I’ve also learnt so much about the industry – it’ll be invaluable experience when I eventually start out as a freelancer myself.
-Elly Dutton, Project Manager
My name is Agnieszka and I work at Atlas as a Project Manager. Since I joined the team at the beginning of July, I have enjoyed it so much that I never leave the office on time. There is so much happening here and the atmosphere is amazing. Because we offer such a wide range of services, I work on different projects and at the same time with different people every day. I simply love it. I am not saying it for the sake of it; I am saying it because it is true.
