Atlas Newsletter – December 2006
Bon Bini Atlas – Welcome!
Another first for Atlas with translation from the language of Papiamento!
Papiamento is the primary language spoken on the Caribbean islands of
Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao - a Creole language whose lexicon is drawn
mainly from Portuguese, with some Spanish and Dutch; the remainder coming
from West African languages. Despite there being only 329 000 speakers
worldwide, Atlas managed to find a native speaker to transcribe the
text for the television company client. The speech from an interviewed
footballer then had to be translated into English for television subtitles.
Despite the deadline being very tight, Atlas came through, to the delight
of the client.
Similarly, Tigre is now one of the languages offered by Atlas, following
the translation of a local authority leaflet on education, which took
the form of a questionnaire for parents. Tigre is spoken by almost one
million people in Eritrea and the Sudan.
Atlas at the Asian Games
Atlas is providing interpretation to Chinese, Japanese and Korean delegations
at the 15th Asian Games, currently taking place in Doha, Qatar. The splendid
opening ceremony took place on 1st December to wide acclaim, welcoming
10 500 athletes from 45 countries. Some 39 sports and disciplines are
represented at the games, ranging from archery to weightlifting, and from
chess to wrestling. Atlas has sent a team of twenty interpreters, including
in-house personnel, to assist the competitors. Preparation started over
one month ago and the initial feedback from the client and the team is
very positive.
Quality Award continues for 2007
Atlas is currently undergoing its regular ISO audit in order to maintain
ISO 9001 certification. This prestigious award has become an international
reference for quality requirements in business to business dealings and
is conferred on companies who can prove that they continually improve
performance towards their clients. Clients of Atlas Translations can therefore
be assured of a high level of professional service, tailored to their
specific needs.
Work in progress…
The company continues to be busy with work for regular customers. Interpretation
has been provided recently to a firm of solicitors for their Bengali clients,
and to a hairdressing school who instruct Italian hairdressers on the
latest styles and products.
To assist existing and future overseas students, Atlas translated schedules
and syllabi for the University of Cambridge into Chinese. Another recent
example of a translation, proofreading and typesetting project was for
a brochure on medical products, where the languages required were Turkish,
Chinese and Spanish.
Pet food pouches move abroad!
A creative agency working for a household name was tasked to devise a
new form of re-sealable packaging in order to reduce the smell of opened
pet food. Atlas was commissioned to translate every element of text on
the innovative packaging. The first countries outside the UK to benefit
from this improvement are Poland and the Czech Republic.
Racing into the New Year!
Atlas was selected by a Saudi Arabian customer to typeset their 2007 calendar,
with a horse racing theme. As the calendar would be used on the Arabian
peninsular, it was produced in both Arabic and English and involved detailed
research into Islamic holidays specific to the Kingdom.
