Atlas Newsletter – June 2007
Introducing our suppliers...
In this month’s newsletter, Atlas would like to give a special mention to its suppliers, who form an essential part of the Atlas team, contributing to the outstanding level of service Atlas offers to its clients.
Phillip, who works as a translator for Atlas, also runs The Indonesian Children’s Appeal, a charity that operates in Indonesia, helping locals rebuild their lives in the wake of the devastating Tsunami that hit the island in the winter of 2004. Atlas recently made a donation to this charity, whose chief projects have concerned themselves with the construction of schools in the region.

“The size and scale of these two projects is scary! Our Charity, with help from its many benefactors, has purchased the land you see in Aceh and in Serpong. We have built the schools and fitted them out with very basic equipment. The development has now stopped and we are consolidating so as to make the best of what we have started…Thank you.” Phillip, The Indonesian Children’s Appeal, http://www.ica-hbct.com/about_us.html
Another one of Atlas’ freelance translators, Sylvie, runs an online bookstore, selling vintage French and English titles. This is also a charitable organization, with 20% of the proceeds going to the Great Sheppard Mission.
Sylvie’s story:
“One street away from my house, there is this wonderful organization, the Great Shepperd Mission. They get all kinds of donations from well-off people around the city and use that money to feed the needy. I shop there often and…could not help but notice the tremendous amount of books…for sale, a lot of them real gems. [The director of the Mission and I] came to an agreement: I would sell his books online and give the mission 20% of my net sales. Today, more than 500 books cram my house, so if you are looking for a great gift while doing a good deed…if you are a book lover, please, please visit my store.” http://www.biblio.com/bookstores/sylvienault.htmlTrados Training for Translators
At the beginning of June, Atlas ran a two-day, intermediate level Trados course for company suppliers. The course instructed attendees on how to use and understand this professional translation software and was the first in a series of courses which Atlas plans to run to aid its translators in furthering their professional development. Atlas staff received excellent feedback from attendees, with one of the participants, Arlete, commenting that it was "very good training... I will be able to use Trados with confidence!"
Tour de France Hits England

The Tour de France, as the name would suggest, is one sporting event which is firmly implanted in the country of its birth: la France. Nevertheless, every year the Tour’s first leg begins at a different location; sometimes even on foreign soil. The year 2007 sees the event exported to England, where the first leg will take place between 6 – 8 July in London and Kent. It promises to be a very exciting few days. Even those who are not cycling enthusiasts need not despair: organisers have arranged a variety of festivals and artistic and cultural events to celebrate the Tour. For further information on these events, visit the Tour de France London website, which is available in French and English versions, providing students with an ideal introduction to French culture and language in the comfort of their own homes.
Arrivals and Departures
Atlas welcomed new staff member Paulina Wasilko into the team on 4th June. Paulina, who comes from Poland, has already settled into her new role as Project Manager and, according to company Director, Clare Suttie, she is “doing very well.”
The team was sad to say goodbye to
Laure Brevard, former Work Placement Team Leader, who returned to France
at the end of May to complete her studies after spending seven happy
months with Atlas.
Laure decided to contribute to this month’s newsletter with the below
excerpt, in which she recalls her time with the company.
Thursday 31st May 2007, the last day of my placement at Atlas…
Although I was really happy to go back home to
my small town, surrounded by mountains, it seemed very weird to leave
my desk at reception after the seven-month placement. And I was even
more sad to leave the Atlas staff, who had been so kind to me during
these months, helping me to get used to Atlas’ organisation during
the first weeks, and then becoming real friends.
I left the office with the feeling that I had learnt a lot, on different
levels: how a company works from an administrative point of view, how
to deal with the suppliers and the clients so that the demand meets
the offer… I have even had the chance to learn how to lead a team,
as I have been Team Leader for all the placements, which was a very
interesting experience. And I am also happy to have been allowed to
do some translation work, which was my main interest. I am sure that
this experience will be extremely beneficial to my career and I would
like to thank Clare, the Director of the company, and all the people
with whom I have worked, in such a great atmosphere!
