“The course has left me feeling much more confident that my translation business is viable and I now know what I need to do to develop my client base and increase my income. I know I have a skill set to be proud of and I can legitimately charge more for my services than I have done to date. The proof is that in just two weeks since completing the course, I’ve been able to raise my rates with a couple of existing clients and approach prospective new clients – and I’ve already had a couple of successes!” Translator who took TBOT course June 2023
Any stage of your career – starting out or stuck further along
With more and more translators asking Clare for advice and support when it comes to creating profitable freelance businesses, we are excited that Clare and Olivia are now able to offer courses and consulting sessions to help new freelance translators launch their businesses and practising freelance translators take their businesses to the next level.
The Business of Translation is the course for practising translators looking to improve their businesses. It includes 5 group sessions, a 2:1 individual coaching session, free resources and follow-on support.
“The Team OC Business of Translation course is the best investment I’ve made in my business to date. As a distraction-prone introvert, the small group format and ‘short, sharp shock’ approach of five sessions (plus homework) over three weeks was ideal. The dual freelance translator/agency owner perspective was a killer combination and provided real insights into what clients are looking for and how best to convince them that it’s me! ” Translator who took TBOT course June 2023
Pathway to Success is a unique course designed to help freelance translators who are just starting out make their first 6 months in business a success. It has a highly practical focus on the business skills you actually need to make a freelance translation career work for you.
The 2:1 consulting sessions are also bookable as a standalone element in blocks of hours to help you troubleshoot issues in your business, navigate a return from parental leave or a period of absence, make major changes to how you run your business or create ambitious but achievable targets for the future. You can use these sessions for any aspect of your business you need some help with.

Clare Suttie has run Atlas Translations Ltd since 1991, offering client-focussed language services. She is an expert in project management – including urgent work and unusual languages, and encourages the promotion of professional linguistic services. Speak to one of the team on our livechat (it really is one of us!) and we can help you arrange a session with Clare and Olivia.
Olivia Morton is a professional freelance translator working primarily from German into English. She loves advising translators on turning their skill and passion for translation into a thriving business.
Olivia can help with pitching your services to clients, client management, marketing, business planning and evaluating your business.
She comments: “When I started out as a translator, access to this kind of knowledge and experience would have changed the course of my career. I will have faced many of the challenges you may be facing so I am well-placed to offer practical and effective advice to freelance translators wanting to take their business to the next level.”
Other training and work placements
Atlas offers training programmes for translation service users and providers, as well as training for Translators, Interpreters and Project Managers.
Atlas has run a Work Placement Student Programme since 1993. Clare has enjoyed helping students to leave the company with a much-improved CV, leading to greater chances of securing a job within the highly competitive language industry, and after receiving very mediocre CVs from clearly talented people who weren’t selling themselves as well as they could!
The presentation sessions were clear, comprehensive and above all, of real practical relevance. Olivia and Clare worked hard to foster a group dynamic that encouraged us all to participate, sharing our experiences, asking questions and learning from each other. I liked the focus on starting with the basics to develop a clear, coherent and attractive CV/LinkedIn profile/website, and really appreciated the detailed (iterative) feedback that was provided to help me produce materials that do my profile justice.
Overall, the course has left me feeling much more confident that my translation business is viable and I now know what I need to do to develop my client base and increase my income. I know I have a skill set to be proud of and I can legitimately charge more for my services than I have done to date. The proof is that in just two weeks since completing the course, I’ve been able to raise my rates with a couple of existing clients and approach prospective new clients – and I’ve already had a couple of successes!
There is a real need for this kind of training for translators and I have no hesitation in recommending this course to fellow translators who’ve lost their way or don’t know where to start with their business development.”
“I felt stuck before our chat. I felt that I have achieved what I could on my own, relying solely on my abilities and resourcefulness. However, without having a mentor or anyone who would have been willing to advise, I was unable to take my career to the next level. The suggestions and information received gave me enough motivation and direction to start anew. I feel way more confident now to refuse what is not in line with my values and go for what I do believe in.”
Positive Feedback for Clare and Olivia and the Business of Translation
“Clare reviewed my CV as part of her CV clinic. I liked the idea of getting the advice of an established agency director, and our session exceeded my expectations. The feedback she provided was in-depth, useful and easy to implement.”
“What a difference a conversation with the right person can make! Clare offered a CV review but our hour long session resulted in so much more than an improved CV. She selflessly offered her insight into the translation industry which she clearly knows inside out. What I find wonderful is that Clare genuinely cares about the freelancers who work for Atlas Translations.”
“Clare’s CV clinic was probably one of the best investments I could have made in my business. Clare took the time to go through my CV, my LinkedIn profile and my website copy. She identified what I had done well and what I could improve, but also gave me actionable tips and advice I could implement straightaway. This CV clinic provides so much more than what it says on the tin; Clare gave me expert feedback on my whole professional presence. Thank you Clare!”
“Clare recently reviewed my CV, LinkedIn profile and website as part of her CV clinic. I found the whole experience really useful. Her encouragement and personalised feedback made me feel much more confident about my CV and applying to agencies. It was great to find out exactly what translation agencies are looking for from an experienced agency director. She also answered questions about other aspects of the translation industry from the agency perspective and created a safe space where I could ask anything. She even took another look at my CV once I’d made the changes.”
“I was impressed by her commitment and the diligence with which she critiqued each aspect of my CV, LI profile and website. Clare offered considered, insightful feedback with actionable points that gave me a fantastic springboard for making improvements, and she was very generous with her time.”
