What is Translation and Localisation?
First, the difference between translation and localisation—although there really is a large crossover between the two.
Translation
The definition of TRANSLATION is the communication of the meaning of a source-language text by means of an equivalent target-language text.
The Oxford English Dictionary prefers a simpler definition. It says the “action or process of translating a word from one language into another.”
If we wanted an example of translation, it would be a direct translation of a business email exchange between two companies or parties. Sometimes, translators just need to provide a straightforward or literal translation.
Localisation
LOCALISATION is the process of making a product or service more suitable for a particular country or area. Oxford English Dictionary defines it as “the process of making something local in character…”
For an example of localisation, imagine an organisation preparing a marketing plan to introduce a new product to a new market in a different country. Within this marketing plan, all promotional, packaging, and other materials would need to be culturally appropriate for the new market. This means the client will need to include meaningful cultural references and language patterns that customers in the new market will recognise and feel comfortable with.
Ideally, the end result is that the client has introduced a new product or service into the new market, and the new customers have now considered that product relatable and valuable.

Tell Me More About Localisation
Localisation is the process of adapting a product or service to a new region or culture. This takes into account legal requirements, formatting specifications, and the cultural nuances of the new market. It is a good idea to localise your product or text if you are looking to market your service and appeal to a specific country.
We localise each and every translation that comes to us, be that changing phone numbers, adapting cultural-specific references, or even changing images.
Our Localisation Process:
- The target market is analysed
- Source content is examined
- Text content is adapted (i.e. for Americanisation or Australianisation)
- The text is translated if required
- Translated text content is proofread
- Any visual content used is checked for suitability
- The finished translation is formatted and/or typeset
- Final checks are completed
We can help with your translation and localisation services, from a certified birth certificate translation to marketing materials in over 30 languages.

What’s Involved in Proofreading and Editing?
Our translation and localisation process is multi-layered. It allows for four stages of checks and edits to ensure the finished article achieves the quality our clients expect.
The first stage involves Atlas Translations choosing a suitable linguist for the task at hand.
Our team of translators consists of experienced, qualified linguists. Even though they come to us highly recommended, that isn’t enough. We always select a translator who is an expert in the relevant field.
Second, the translator gets to work and translates the source text into the target language. Afterwards, they return their draft to Atlas Translations.
Third, we ask another linguist, equally qualified and experienced in translation in the same field, to proofread the first translator’s work. Our proofreader may make suggestions or identify areas for improvement. The text may need tweaking. It may be perfect. But it’s always better to have a second pair of eyes to assess it. The original translator returns the reviewed translation for amends.
Fourth and finally, once we have the final draft at Atlas, we perform an in-house quality check. This ensures the text translation, review, amends and typesetting meet our high standards before sending the final version to the client.

Now let’s tell you about a project we worked on…
BookTrust is a UK charity that works to inspire a love of reading in children and their families. They wanted to spread their message to non-English speaking families across the UK and needed help to reach this audience in 28 different languages.
We were the translation and localisation company that BookTrust needed. Offering the right services and project management, we selected professional linguists who translated and localised BookTrusts’ documents into the various languages they wanted to target.
This allowed us to deliver a high-quality result by conveying the needed tone, inferences, and expressions seamlessly.
