Word of the Day

Learn a new language or broaden your vocabulary with the “word of the day”!

Word of the Day? Several times a day, do you find yourself wasting precious time waiting for something? Waiting in line at the cash desk at the supermarket, waiting for the bus at the bus station, waiting to get called into the doctor’s office, passing time on the tube waiting to arrive at your desired destination and so on. Most of these times we grab our phones to check social media, text our friends, do some quick online-shopping. Maybe play some Candy Crush or what else there is to do to pass the time. But instead of filling our minds and hearts with all this social media gossip or buying the 20th pair of black jeans we don’t need and probably will never wear, there is a much nicer way to entertain yourself for a short time and learn something new along the way!

Ever heard of the “word of the day”? No? Well, then look it up, when you have 5 minutes to spare.

Every day dictionary publishers of different languages nominate their “word of the day”. Amongst these are the English Merriam Webster, the German Duden as well as the Spanish Real Academica Española. They usually choose lesser known words for their “word of the day”, and chances are, you never heard of them before. That’s why they also give a brief explanation on what the word means and where it originated from. So it’s a great way to get your daily dose of education. No matter if you want to broaden your vocabulary in a language you already speak or you want to learn a new language one word a day.

You can even learn about a fictional language – read about some of those in our blog here: https://www.atlas-translations.co.uk/language/fictional-languages/
